| Council appeals to conserve supply ignored |
APPEALS for Fingal householders to conserve water appear to have fallen on deaf ears with an all-time record for water consumption recorded across the Dublin region on Sunday, leaving water supplies in the county critically low and an emergency response from the council.
Director of services at the water department, Michael Lorigan, announced that the council would have to join with the other Dublin local authorities in taking the 'unfortunate decision' to cut back water supply to Fingal households. Mr Lorigan said that the council was not shutting supplies off but reducing pressure in the system will mean that people on high ground or at the end of lines may lose water supply completely.
He said that tankers of water were being mobilised both from the council's own resources and through private contractors, to service the worst hit areas. | | | | Lar Spain, a senior engineer from Fingal County Council's water services department, told councillors last night |

(Monday), that water usage leapt to some 628 mega litres on Sunday across the four Dublin local authorities, an all-time record, despite warnings to conserve water issued in the last few days.
In fact, Mr Spain said that the Dublin region had never seen water consumption rise above 600 mega litres for a single day before and the region produced a maximum of 540 mega litres which means for days now, the stocks of water in reservoirs have been severely hit.
Water levels at Ballycoolin and Garristown reservoirs are described as 'critical' after the big freeze and despite the current thaw, the council has warned that these water conservation measures are likely to continue for several days this week.
Householders across the county are being asked to 'keep their water use to the absolute minimum' and check out taptips.ie for hints on how to live with less water.
The council says it is taking the measure in an effort to 'allow water levels in reservoirs to increase'.
